Chapter Thirty-Two

Mark turned around and saw Caleb standing there, pistol in hand, and he felt like all his fucking nightmares were coming true at once.

It was light outside, but it was oppressively dark in here. It felt like this cabin they were in sucked all the life and light out of the outside world, and like it was some kind of void in itself. A void without life. A void where only badness existed. Where evil festered.

The walls in here were as black as treacle. There was a dampness to the air, too. A humidity. The sense that every breath infected you in some way with its malice.

And a smell.

A ghastly, awful smell. Clinging to Mark’s nostrils with every breath.

A smell like rotten eggs.

Like off-milk.

And for some reason, Mark couldn’t shake the feeling that smell was coming from Caleb.

Caleb looked different since he’d last seen him. He didn’t know how long it was exactly. Couldn’t have been all that long. But the change was dramatic. He looked skinnier, like he’d lost all of his already slim bodyweight. His skin had this sweaty sheen to it, pale and pallid underneath. Almost a green shade to him as if the mould was working its way through his bloodstream, too. His teeth looked yellow against his white skin. One side of his face drooped and looked charred as if he’d had a stroke.

And the wound in his neck.

The knife wound that Mark had buried into him.

There were stitches in there. But they looked a weird shade of red. A really dark shade, with a blackness to them too.

The skin around was blotchy. Sore infected.

So bad Mark could almost feel it himself.

But the fact of the matter?

Caleb was standing there pointing a pistol at him.

Behind Mark, Ava sat.

Lily sat.

Both tied and gagged.

Seb stood between them. Growling at Caleb. Snarling at him.

“Well don’t you all look delighted to see me?”

“Caleb,” Mark said. The anger building up inside. The rage building up inside. Because this man was a murderer. He’d murdered Charlie. He’d murdered so many children, exploding that house.

He lifted his rifle and went to fire.

“Bad idea,” Caleb said. Pointing his rifle towards Ava. “Now we’ll have none of that shithousery. Not one bit of it. No. Now put that rifle on the floor right now, and we can have a nice little chat. Like grown-ups. Because we’re all mature adults, here. Ain’t that right?”

Mark held his ground. Kept that rifle pointed at Caleb.

Heart racing.

Pulse pounding in his skull.

Wanting nothing more than to just pull that trigger and get it done.

But he saw the way Caleb stood there.

The way he pointed that pistol across the room.

Over towards Ava.

And that manic look in his eyes of a man who didn’t have much left to lose.

“Come on. Trust me. I’m just as surprised as you are to see you alive. But we don’t need to get caught up in the past here, do we? Put the rifle down, and I’ll put my gun here right now. Then we can have a proper chat.
